This was my second state convention and as always it was amazing but this year felt stronger somehow. My freshman year I liked Latin but I wasn't very involved and Edison was still the underdog. This year however everyone stepped up and we really planted our roots deeper into the Virginia Junior Classical League, we started spirit, developed a social media page and started this blog.
My love for Latin between last convention and this one has blossomed in ways I have never loved school or a community before. I joined the certamen team and learned how to study better and I joined the Latin League team. Also this year I became spirit captain and editor of the Aquilifer which you are reading right now.
We arrived in front of the school at 5:50 am on Sunday November 24th. The bus started to pull out at 6:08 am. On the ride there most everyone slept because of how early it was. We arrived in Richmond at the convention center at 8:34 am. We unpacked the bus registered for art projects and brought our bags to the hotel holding room where they would stay till later that night.
At 9:45 We marched into the spirit contest led by our President Abel and our Vice President Surafel. We cheered with all we could using pom poms and strings of lights hoping to stand out. After our time was up to cheer we sat down to watch the proceedings of the Salvete Assembly.
At 4:47 we all took out bed sheets and wrapped them around ourselves to make bedsheet togas. We walked across the street to the Roman Banquet for dinner. After dinner and test test session III most of us went to the hotel for some down time and to unpack the rest of us went to the dance. At the dance we made a conga line with the entire dance floor to the song “Fireball”.
At 11:45 we had our fellowship pizza party in the hotel lobby. We all ate our pizza as Ms. Procaccino went over what we had done that day and how she was proud of us.
The next day we went back to the assembly room one last time. Edison won first place in the social media category getting hundreds of views on every reel we had created, second place in spirit and first place in publication. Call it beginners luck but we will be back next year with just us much if not more determination.
